The purpose of recording the Veteran's Honorable Discharge (DD214) is to secure the record of the honorable discharge of the soldier, sailor, marine, or nurse who has served in the the United States Army, Navy, Marines, Air Corp, or Coast Guard for future access for benefits of the veteran or survivor.
The DD Form 214 is issued to Soldiers who are released from active duty (90 or more days) or awarded an MOS/AOC, and processed through a transition point; the DD Form 215 is issued to correct administrative data on previously issued DD Forms 214.
Veterans or their next of kin who need assistance in obtaining service records, a DD 214, or replacement awards and medals must formally request them through the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC). The NPRC is the records custodian for most discharged and retired members of all branches of service.
There are two avenues former service members can use to pursue a change in the characterization of their discharge. First is the Discharge Review Board, also called a DRB. The military departments each have their own DRB. Second is the Board for Correction of Military or Naval Records, also called a BCMR or BCNR.
