Family homes in which care is provided for more than three children, including the caregiver's own children, related and unrelated children, must be licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).
The application process takes about 4 months. It will take longer if there are out-of-state background checks.

Establishment of administrative paternity and/or child support orders may take 90 days or less. As in court, paternity and child support may be established by default if DCSS has proof that the alleged father received proper notification to appear for an appointment or genetic testing, but failed to appear.
