Q: Can I combine my Montgomery and Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits? A: No. Servicemembers and veterans are allowed to only use one education benefit program at a time. However, in some cases you may be able to use the Post-9/11 GI Bill when you have exhausted your Montgomery GI Bill.
To access the MGIB-AD benefit, the Department of Veterans Affairs must first approve the program. You can find approved programs through the GI Bill® Comparison Tool. Or contact the VA through Ask VA. If the program is approved, you then need to submit an Application for VA Benefits (VA Form 22-1990) online.

Regular Army Soldiers have 90 calendar days from their BASD (the date they entered Active Duty) to "Opt Out Of" the Title 38, Chapter 30 Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty via DD Form 2366 or, by law, the WILL BE automatically enrolled into the education incentive.
Eligibility. To qualify, you must meet the following requirements: Have a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve signed after June 30, 1985. If you are an officer, you must have agreed to serve six years in addition to your original obligation.
