To change your MOT date you have to book in early, within the allowed time frames. You can't extend your MOT date, only move it forward. You don't want to drive around without a valid MOT after all. You can book your MOT up to one month before your vehicle's existing certificate runs out minus one day.
If your vehicle's tax has expired, or the car's MOT is within five days and you haven't been able to obtain a booking, contact the DVA Customer Service team via email at dva.customerservices@infrastructure-ni.uk. The DVA promises to do their best to get you an emergency appointment.
Contrary to popular belief, there's no grace period for renewing lapsed MOT certificates. Driving with an expired MOT certificate is illegal and can result in fines and legal penalties. The only exception is if you are on your way to a pre-booked MOT retest or garage repair appointment.
You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT. You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. If your MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can get an MOT to keep the same renewal date for next year is 16 April.
If you get to within 10 days of the expiry date of your tax and you have been unable to secure an MOT appointment or your tax has expired, fill in the short notice appointment request form(external link opens in a new window / tab) . You will need to give the following information: vehicle registration number.
