(The United States-based convention for formatting a date places the month before the day. For example: June 11, 2001. ) Write out the month, day and year two inches from the top of the page. Depending which format you are using for your letter, either left justify the date or tab to the center point and type the date.

It's always best to address the person directly by name if you can find out this information. If not, other options include using the name of the group or department, the person's job title, or, if you're not addressing one specific person, “To Whom It May Concern.”

This format puts the year first, followed by the month and then the day, i.e. YYYY-MM-DD. For example: 2023-04-12 would be 12 April 2023. 2024-08-05 would be 05 August 2024.

Write out the full date with no abbreviations. If both you and your recipient of the letter are in the U.S., Belize, or Micronesia, write your date in month-date-year format. For instance, if your letter were dated 02/23/2019, you would write the date as "February 23, 2019."

Most formal letters will start with 'Dear' before the name of the person that you are writing to. You can choose to use first name and surname, or title. and surname. However, if you don't know the name of the person you are writing to, you must use 'Dear Sir or Madam,'.

If you are on first-name terms with the reader, use 'Dear Jane'. Otherwise use 'Dear Mr Smith', 'Dear Miss Smith' or, if you are writing to a woman and don't know which title she prefers, use 'Dear Ms Smith'. If you don't know the person's name, use 'Dear Sir', 'Dear Madam' or occasionally 'Dear Sir or Madam'.

Envelopes: Write your address (the "return" or "sender" address) in the top left corner. Write the delivery address (the "recipient" address) in the bottom center.

When addressing an envelope, include both the sender's address and the recipient's address. Write the sender's name and address in the upper left-hand corner. Write the company name if you're sending from a business. The recipient's name and address should be placed on the center of the letter.
