FAQ

Any resident or non-resident individual in the state of Utah who earned income and is required to file a tax return should use the 2023 Utah TC-40 Individual form.

If you think the draft order correctly says what was ordered, you can sign in the "Approved as to Form" section and either file the signed document with the court, or return it to the other party. Even if you refuse to approve it as to form, the other party can still file the proposed order.

Form W-4 tells your employer how much tax to withhold from each paycheck. Learn more about how and when to adjust your W-4.

You must file returns quarterly unless you use federal form 1040 Schedule H to report household employment taxes or form 944, Employer's Annual Federal Tax Return. In these cases, you file annually. File withholding returns online using form TC-941E at tap.utah.

The form includes sections for reporting adjusted gross income, standard deductions, tax credits, and contributions to political party funds and charitable organizations. It provides detailed instructions on how to complete the form and emphasizes the importance of timely filing to avoid penalties.

Both federal and state withholding taxes are amounts deducted from your paycheck to cover your income tax liability. The goal of withholding is to ensure you don't owe a large sum at the end of the year. While federal taxes are consistent across the U.S., state taxes vary widely depending on where you live.

Taxable income is calculated by subtracting all personal exemptions from total income. In Utah, you can claim a personal exemption of $1,941 for each dependent you claimed on your federal tax return. Exemptions can be claimed for filers, spouses and dependents.

The Utah withholding account number is a 14-character number. The first eleven characters are numeric and the last three are “WTH.” Do not enter hyphens. Example: 12345678901WTH. If form W-2 or 1099 does not include this number, contact the employer or payer to get the correct number to enter on TC-40W, Part 1.

Before 2018, taxpayers could claim a personal exemption for themselves and each of their dependents. The amount would have been $4,150 for 2018, but the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) set the amount at zero for 2018 through 2025. TCJA increased the standard deduction and child tax credits to replace personal exemptions.

The deduction for personal exemptions is suspended (reduced to $0) for tax years 2018 through 2025 by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Although the exemption amount is zero, the ability to claim an exemption may make taxpayers eligible for other tax benefits.
