Is Marcus John Wick's Dad? Marcus, who we see in the first movie, appears to be only an old friend of John's. It's easy to wonder if there's a family connection between the two with Marcus' desire to keep John alive and aid him against Viggo Tarasov. It seems unlikely that Marcus is John Wick's father, though.
The bad people are mad at John Wick and want to kill him for his aggressive disregard for the sanctity of human life. John Wick in turn needs to kill all of the bad people to avoid being killed himself.
He accepted it because he believed it was exclusive to him, meaning he could possibly help John or keep him alive a bit longer. Once he realizes that isn't the case (like when he's watching him get to bed, before Perkins strikes), he realizes it's not exclusive and steps in to save him throughout his journey.
1 Answer 1 If he refused the contract, then Viggo would have just hired other people to kill John. Marcus, wanting to protect John, chose to take the contract, thus giving Viggo some reassuring and stalling John's assassination.
By shooting Reeves' character in John Wick 3's ending, Winston was actually saving them both. On the surface, he seems to be following through with his fealty to the High Table, but, clearly, he doesn't shoot to kill.
