Preliminary injunction. n. a court order made in the early stages of a lawsuit or petition which prohibits the parties from doing an act which is in dispute, thereby maintaining the status quo until there is a final judgment after trial. The plaintiff has the burden of proving that the defendant has breached the contract and that injunctive relief is necessary to prevent further harm. The plaintiff must also prove that the harm caused by the breach cannot be adequately compensated through monetary damages alone.
