The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 (known as the CPRs) controlled unfair practices used by traders when dealing with consumers, and created criminal offences for traders that breached them, until 5 April 2025.

Unfair trade practices imposed by the stronger party to a contract can have a profound impact on the functioning of the market, increasing costs and reducing revenues of the parties that experience them.

These protection from unfair trading provisions address: A general ban on unfair commercial practices. A ban on misleading and aggressive practices, which are assessed in light of the effect they have, or are likely to have, on the average consumer.

Right to Seek Redressal: If a consumer faces an unfair trade practice, they have the right to seek compensation, a refund, or a replacement from the service provider or seller.

An Act to protect consumers against unfair practices and to give consumers additional rights in respect of goods that do not conform to contract, and for matters connected therewith.

The CPRs contain a general prohibition of unfair commercial practices and, in particular, contain prohibitions of misleading and aggressive commercial practices. They also prohibit 31 specific commercial practices that are listed in chapter 6 on banned practices.
