“A jury has a power of lenity and can bring in a not guilty verdict in the teeth of the facts.” In its full form, we call the power: jury nullification. It's the power of the jury to veto unjust laws. Juries have had this power since the beginning of the United States.

Rule 27.05 (Pretrial Diversion) does not preclude the prosecutor and defendant from agreeing to diversion of a case without court approval if charges are not pending before the court.
A judge or judicial officer who has presided at a motion or other proceeding or who is assigned by the Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court may not be removed except upon an affirmative showing that the judge or judicial officer is disqualified under the Code of Judicial Conduct.
Far from being an unintended side-effect, jury nullification is explicitly authorized in the constitutions of 24 states. The constitutions of Maryland, Indiana, Oregon, and Georgia currently have provisions guaranteeing the right of jurors to “judge” or “determine” the law in “all criminal cases.”
