Prospective jurors are randomly selected by computer. If selected, a juror is mailed a green postcard summons.
You can't serve on a jury more than once in 3 years. This doesn't count out-of-state or Federal District Court juries.
If you are selected to serve on a trial, you must remain for the duration of jury selection and the trial. Once your service is completed, you will not be eligible to be selected again for three years.
Reasons for Being Excused from Jury Service Medical reasons. Public necessity. Undue hardship. Dependent care. Student Status. Military conflict. Other reason deemed sufficient by the court.
Under Federal law, a person cannot be required to serve jury duty more often than once every two (2) years.
Jury trials provide an opportunity for citizens to participate in the judicial process. Jury trials give citizens on the jury the power to make a decision on the case. People who serve on juries routinely have a greater respect for the system when they leave.
When you have completed your jury service, the Court will automatically mail a letter certifying your jury service to your home address. The letter will list only the days you were present in the courthouse and it should arrive within two weeks. (Please note your juror's check will not be enclosed in this letter.)
You may request to be excused from jury duty due to hardship or extreme inconvenience. Hardship implies circumstances that make it “unfair” for you to serve. Your request must provide enough information to enable the court to make an informed decision.

Purpose of This Handbook The purpose of this handbook is to acquaint trial jurors with the general nature and importance of their role as jurors. Where do you get the names of potential jurors?In a jury trial, the judge runs the trial but the jury decides which facts are relevant to the case and renders a verdict. The use of trial juries (also called petit juries) and grand juries goes back approximately 800 years. This sets us apart from the rest of the world. The Supreme Court has historically recognized the important role juries play in our system. For example, in Parsons v. Jury selection will conclude with 12 jurors and usually a couple alternates. Most federal courts only have six jurors, even in criminal cases. 20 (1) Eight jurors must be sworn to give their verdict in the proceeding brought before them in the court.
