Any person who fails to appear pursuant to such order or who fails to show good cause for noncompliance with the summons may be fined up to $1,000.00, imprisoned not more than three days, ordered to perform community service, or any combination thereof.
A physician's letter or medical form is required for excusal/postponement from jury duty for medical reasons. Other reasons for excusal/postponement are reviewed and evaluated pursuant to court policy. Jurors receive a prompt response in writing or by email upon submitting excusal / postponement requests.
Most contact between a federal court and a prospective juror will be through the U.S. mail, and any phone or email contact by real court officials will not include requests for any sensitive information. Jury duty is a vital civic responsibility and should be taken seriously by all citizens.
For example, write something like “My name is Jane Doe. On (date), I received a jury summons for (court date) at (court address) and was assigned the juror number (insert number here). I am writing to request to be excused from jury service because being absent from work would pose an extreme financial hardship.”
Don't talk about the case, or issues raised by the case with anyone, including other jurors, while the trial is going on, and don't let others talk about the case in your presence, even family members. If someone insists on talking to you or another juror about the case, please report the matter to a court employee.
