Pursuant to California Code of Civil Procedure Section 209, any prospective juror who has been summoned for service, and who fails to respond as directed and be excused from attendance, may be found in contempt of court, punishable by fine ($1,500), incarceration (5 days) or both.
For example, write something like “My name is Jane Doe. On (date), I received a jury summons for (court date) at (court address) and was assigned the juror number (insert number here). I am writing to request to be excused from jury service because being absent from work would pose an extreme financial hardship.”
1. Medical Reasons. One of the most compelling excuses for being excused from jury duty is a medical condition. If you have a serious illness or disability that would make serving on a jury difficult or impossible, you can request an exemption.
I would feel guilty ducking jury service absent illness, caretaking of another, death in the family, financial hardship, or a conflict with one's preexisting plans like a cruise. Absent personal illness, you would be expected to show up in response to the summons, then ask to be excused.
