In March 2019, Utah lawmakers unanimously passed HB 431, Utah's Clean Slate law, which automatically clears qualifying misdemeanor records.

Utah's “Clean Slate” law was implemented on February 10th 2022 and the Utah Courts began the process of automatically expunging qualifying misdemeanor records.

In California, a background check will typically reveal if somebody was convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, such as common crimes like driving under the influence (DUI) or Penal Code 243.4 PC domestic battery.

The only way a criminal history can be purged is through an expungement or sealing (different states use different terms, but they mean essentially the same thing) of each arrest and/or conviction. That process requires hiring an attorney, and there is no guarantee it will come out the way you like.

State and federal laws prohibit California employers from discriminating against applicants based on race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Being convicted of a misdemeanor does not necessarily preclude you from obtaining work in California.
