FAQ

For California ABA-accredited law schools, the pass rate for first time test-takers was 81%, up 5 percentage points from 2023. The State Bar of California reported today that 53.8 percent of applicants passed the July 2024 General Bar Examination (GBX).

Results are released about 12-14 weeks after the February exam and 16-18 weeks after the July exam.

Results are posted on the Applicant Portal. At p.m. on the day results are posted, applicants can also access the pass list on the State Bar website. Applicants who have failed the exam receive the grades assigned to their written answers as well as their MBE scaled score.

Every jurisdiction releases their bar exam results independently. While release dates vary by jurisdiction and from year to year, reporting and grading periods typically fall between 6-12 weeks.

For comparison, North Carolina often has the speediest bar exam results (released in about 4 weeks!), while California has the slowest bar exam results (released in about 14 weeks).

The answer files of unsuccessful applicants will be posted in the Applicant Portal with the release of results. Successful applicants do not receive their grades nor their MBE scores and will not have their answers returned.

California is widely considered to have the hardest bar exam, due to its low pass rate and the difficulty of the content and constraints of the exam.

Results from the July 2024 bar exam will be released to applicants through the Applicant Portal on November 8, 2024, at p.m. The pass list will be posted on the Examination Pass List webpage on Sunday, November 10, 2024.

California's General Bar Exam pass rate of 53.8 percent is up from last year's July pass rate of 51.5 percent, and 2022's July pass rate of 52.4 percent. Preliminary statistical analyses show that of the 8,291 applicants who completed the GBX, 67.7 percent were first-time takers.

Wondering how test-takers are doing as a whole? ing to the most recent data released by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE®), in 2021, of the 64,833 total persons taking the bar exam, 39,873 passed, which is an overall pass rate of 60% (down 1%from the previous year).
