FAQ

California Bar Examination Please note that the State Bar does not offer reciprocity or accept bar exam scores from another jurisdiction.

Not really. A California-licensed attorney may be granted temporary permission to practice law in another state for a specific case through pro hac vice admission. Be careful, however, pro hac vice practice has its limitations.

An attorney from another state may be permitted to practice in Massachusetts if he or she gets permission from the court, but only a local attorney can file that motion for admission pro hac vice. It is not a good idea however to use an out of state attorney.

Massachusetts has entered into agreements for reciprocity with Connecticut, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee, Vermont, and Washington D.C. The Board of Bar Examiners is continuing to work with a number of jurisdictions that will administer the same remote exam to expand this list of reciprocal jurisdictions.

Pass the Massachusetts Bar Exam A total score of 270 or higher is what you need to pass. After passing the bar itself you'll also need to complete a separate Massachusetts Law Component (MLC). The MLC is a multiple choice exam on key distinctions and essential highlights of Massachusetts law and procedure.

Lawyers are allowed to provide services in another state if they will not be going to courts, such as arbitration and mediation. Out-of-state lawyers can also represent clients in another state if they will be working with a local lawyer. This is allowed under the “pro hac vice” process.

The average wait time for bar exam results is 1-3 months. The smaller the jurisdiction, the more likely the results will be released earlier. However, some larger states take nearly the same length of time. In some cases, exam administration also impacts the timing of the release of the results.

Admission on Motion (Reciprocity) New York State permits admission on motion, without examination, for applicants who have practiced for five of the preceding seven years, are admitted to practice in at least one reciprocal U.S. jurisdiction, and have graduated from an American Bar Association approved law school.
