FAQ

The written components— the Multistate Essay Exam and the Multistate Performance Test—make up the remainder of your score. A good rule of thumb is that you'll need to answer about 66% of the graded MBE questions correctly to pass the bar exam, assuming you perform reasonably well on the other components.

Scaled scores are calculated by using statistical procedures to translate raw scores onto the 200-800 scale with 500 as the passing score. You cannot calculate the number of questions you got right or wrong from the scaled scores.

(Note that most jurisdictions, including Uniform Bar Exam jurisdictions, do not require a minimum passing MBE score. So long as you receive 266 points total, you will pass!) However, it is still helpful to know the approximate score that is considered passing so that you know if you are on track.

The MEE and MPT scores are scaled to the MBE and UBE total scores are calculated by NCBE. The MBE is weighted 50%, the MEE 30%, and the MPT 20%. UBE total scores are reported on a 400-point scale. Jurisdictions set their own minimum passing scores for the UBE.

If you are aiming for an MBE score of 136-140 (which is a passing MBE score in jurisdictions that require a 272-280 to pass) you should aim for 62%-65%. This means you should get 62-65 questions correct on a 100-question practice test or 124-130 questions correct on a full MBE exam.

How Hard is the New York Bar Exam? The New York bar exam cut score or passing mark (266/400) is higher than it is in some other other states. However, a majority of states have higher score requirements than New York.

If you took the Attorneys' Examination, your total scaled score is equal to your written scaled score. If you took the General Bar Examination and wish to calculate your total scaled score on your own: Multiply your MBE scaled score by . 50.

So, as a general rule, if you are answering somewhere between 60 and 67%, your MBE raw score is in the “passing zone” depending on the jurisdiction you are in.

MBE Scores – Raw vs. The percentage needed for a passing MBE score in California is 67.5%. This means an MBE score of approximately 119 raw (119/175) is passing. A raw score of 119 should equal a scaled score of 144. Keep in mind, California uses a thousand-point scale.
