Prior to admission by examination, an applicant must pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE). The current passing scaled score is 85. Arrangements to take the MPRE must be made directly with the Multistate Bar Examination Committee of the National Conference of Bar Examiners.
Michigan total scores are reported on a 200-point scale and a passing score of 135 is required.
Rule 15 Admission to the Bar Upon motion made in open court by an active member of the State Bar of Michigan, the court may enter an order admitting such applicant to the bar of this state.
Most states provide the attorney's bar number, but some do not. In a few states, the state does not issue a bar license number.
The Board of Law Examiners set the Michigan UBE passing cut score at 268. Transferable scores may not be older than 3 years and must have been from a full UBE exam that the applicant has passed. Applicants must request NCBE sent their UBE scores to the Board. A score of 85 or higher is required on the MPRE.
An applicant need not have graduated from law school in order to take the MPRE and the MPRE may be taken an unlimited number of times. An applicant for admission must obtain a satisfactory score on the Michigan bar examination, or be eligible for admission without examination.
(15) An applicant has the burden of proving by clear and convincing evidence that he or she has the current good moral character and general fitness to warrant admission to the bar.
There is no bar reciprocity in California, though the state does offer a modified bar exam to those who have actively practiced law for at least four years immediately preceding their bar application.
