California was one of the first states to unify its bar (1927). A unified, or integrated bar, means simply that membership is mandatory for all attorneys who are licensed to practice law in the state.
In most states, lawyers are also issued a unique bar identification number. In states like California where unauthorized practice of law is a major problem, the state bar number must appear on all documents submitted by a lawyer.
In order to report to the appropriate taxing authorities, financial institutions should use the State Bar of California's Taxpayer Identification number 94-6001385 on all Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts.
Bar notation is an easier way to write a repeating number by putting a line, or bar, over the repeating numbers. Here's another example. 1 / 7 = 0.142857142857142857142857142857... But using bar notation, you would say 1 / 7 = 0.142857 with a line over those numbers to show that they repeat over and over.
