A joint sponsor is an individual that will sign a separate Affidavit of Support binding them to the same financial responsibilities described above as the primary sponsor, the individual petitioning for their family member. The primary sponsor and the joint sponsor will both be equally liable.
What is a joint sponsor? A joint sponsor — or a financial co-sponsor — is a U.S. citizen or green card holder (permanent resident) who agrees to take on the legal obligation of financially supporting an applicant for a family-based green card.
Income and assets of the joint sponsor are taken into account independently from those of the primary sponsor. The I-864A entails a household member contributing to the primary sponsor's income and assets, whereas the joint sponsor is a different person who provides additional financial support.
If more than one individual agrees to help support the sponsored immigrant, each individual must sign a separate Form I-864A.
If you have a joint sponsor, they must also complete Form I-864.
