FAQ

The written portion (essays and PT) and MBE portion of the examination are weighted equally, 50 percent each. To break it down further, five essays are worth 40% of your overall exam score, and PT is 10% of your overall bar exam score (one PT counts for two essays).

The process is outlined below: If you receive a score at or over 1440, you automatically pass the California bar exam. If, after one reading of your answers, your score is below 1390, you fail the California bar exam.

Your overall score (Your Uniform Bar Exam score report should also clearly indicate “PASS” or “FAIL”!) Uniform Bar Exam states require a score between 260 and 280 to pass the Uniform Bar Exam. So, if your score was above 280, you technically received a score that is considered passing in every Uniform Bar Exam state.

To access your results, visit the admissions applicant portal from the calbar.ca website. You will need your applicant number and file number. You can access detailed performance data for the General Bar Exam through the Applicant Portal.

California is widely considered to have the hardest bar exam, due to its low pass rate and the difficulty of the content and constraints of the exam.

Results are released about 12-14 weeks after the February exam and 16-18 weeks after the July exam.

Results are posted on the Applicant Portal. At p.m. on the day results are posted, applicants can also access the pass list on the State Bar website. Applicants who have failed the exam receive the grades assigned to their written answers as well as their MBE scaled score.

The general rule is a lawyer can only practice law in a state court when they have been admitted to the bar of that state. An exception would be when the attorney is admitted on a pro hac vice basis, where the out-of-state lawyer can practice with an in-state attorney acting as local counsel.

Applicants who are already licensed to practice law in another state or jurisdiction must register as an attorney applicant, complete a positive moral character determination and pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination as well as the California Bar Examination.
