How much Illness Benefit will I get? Your weekly rate of Illness Benefit (IB) will depend on your average weekly earnings in the relevant tax year. Average weekly earnings are your gross earnings (without deductions) in the relevant tax year divided by the actual number of weeks you worked in that year.
A sick note or certificate of incapacity to work (Arbeitsunfahigkeitsbescheinigung/AU-Bescheinigung/Krankschreibung/gelber Schein) is the certificate you get from your doctor when he/she determines that you cannot work because of illness. It usually states the day on which you saw the doctor.
If you have between 104 and 259 weeks PRSI contributions paid, you can claim Illness Benefit for up to 52 weeks (312 payment days). If you have 260 weeks PRSI paid since you first started work you can claim Illness Benefit for a maximum of 2 years (624 payment days).
Illness benefit applications should be processed in one week. The only reason an application should be delayed is if the Department does not receive a medical certificate from the applicant.
