Tennessee Code Annotated 70-2-108 became law in 1985 and states: (a) Every person born on or after January 1, 1969, before hunting, shall possess, in addition to all other licenses and permits required, proof of satisfactory completion of an agency-approved hunter education course.

Any person born on or after January 1st, 1969 must complete a state-approved hunter education course and obtain a Hunter Education Card to hunt legally within the state of Tennessee.

The application period for the elk quota hunts is June 15 - July 27, 2022. Quota Hunt applications can be conveniently submitted via the Internet, TWRA Licensed Agent locations, or TWRA Regional Offices, via the TWRA Mobile App.

Everyone who hunts on Wildlife Management Areas is required to have a WMA permit except Lifetime or Sportsman License holders and youths under age 16 hunting small game and waterfowl. Youth hunters must be accompanied by an adult with a valid WMA small game permit. Youths under 6 may not hunt big game on a WMA.

The WMA Big Game Quota Hunts application period will be June 15 - Midnight July 27, 2022. Customers who are interested in applying for both the WMA quota hunt and elk quota hunt will have to submit two applications, one for each. The computer drawings will be handled separately.

A Quota Hunt is a managed hunt that allows a set number of hunters to participate. A quota is placed on a hunt to protect natural resources (wildlife and their habitats), provide a high-quality hunting experience and maintain a high level of safety.

If they are the landowner's spouse, child, spouse of a child, or grandchild, and residents of Tennessee, then they DO NOT need a hunting license. They fall under the same requirements as the resident landowner.

Licenses can be purchased from the TWRA or other distributors across the state - they go on sale on February 18th each year, and are valid until the last day of February on the following year.
