According to the California Building Standards Code, no building or structure may be erected, constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved, improved, removed, converted or demolished unless a separate permit for each building or structure has first been obtained from the building official.

Building Permits are required for any kitchen or bathroom remodels, and must be obtained before any construction, alteration, or addition work begins. If your remodel project is NOT for a house or duplex, separate Mechanical, Electrical or Plumbing (MEP) permits are also required.

Roof and Ground Mount Solar Installation. Patio Covers (Solid and Lattice) Enclosed Patios.

In general, improvements, replacements, and repairs require permits. Exemptions from permitting are allowed for certain work, but vary for each jurisdiction. Always check with your Building, Zoning, Fire, Environmental Health (lead paint, asbestos, etc.), and Public Works Departments for their specific requirements.

Building permits are needed in all new construction projects and most renovation projects in the state of California.

A permit is required when 25 percent or more of an existing roof is to be reroofed in any 12-month period. Less than 25 percent is considered a repair and doesn't require a permit. Seperate permits for each onsite structure being reroofed. Secure a separate permit for each building onsite undergoing a reroof project.

Do All Types of Bathroom Remodeling Projects Require a Permit? It is mandatory to have a builder's permit in California, irrespective of which room you are remodeling or what the project might involve. Alterations, repairs, renovations, improvements, additions, demolitions, etc.

Projects that change the configuration of walls, pipes, wiring, roofs, or major appliances typically DO require at least one type of building permit. Projects that DO NOT need a building permit are simple surface (cosmetic) projects; minor repairs and replacements; and minor site improvements or small structures.

Contractors who violate the law are subject to disciplinary action by CSLB, including civil penalty assessments of up to $5,000 per violation, an order of correction that requires payment of permit fees and any assessed penalties imposed by the local building department, and suspension or revocation of the license.
