The indicia must be placed in a clear area that is free from any other text, graphics or markings. The actual size of the indicia must be a minimum of one-half inch high by one-half inch wide. It must be placed no more than 1.5 inches below, or to the left of, the upper right hand corner of your postcard.

Put all the pieces into ZIP Code order. Group or stack them ing to the first 3 digits of their ZIP Codes. When there are 15 or more pieces to the exact same 5-digit ZIP Code, band them into a package or packages. The maximum thickness of each package is 4 inches.

An indicia is not actual postage. You don't pay anything to print it. You just include it when you have your mail piece printed. You pay the postage when you actually mail the piece at a postal bulk mail unit. You generally must be mailing at least 200 pieces or 50 pounds of mail at one time to use an indicia.

The correct format for a numeric ZIP+4 code is five digits, a hyphen, and four digits. The first five digits represent the 5-digit ZIP Code; the sixth and seventh digits (the first two after the hyphen) identify an area known as a sector; the eighth and ninth digits identify a smaller area known as a segment.

Customized portions of the proposed indicia design must be in color, e.g., brand images, corporate logos and trademarks. Required elements of the indicia must be in black, e.g., class of mail, U.S. Postage Paid, permit number, etc.

Permit imprint indicia can be used only as part of a commercial mailing that you bring to the Post Office?it cannot be used to send individual pieces of mail. Some companies print brochures with a permit indicia to use in a commercial mailing. Then they hand those same brochures out to customers.

So what do the extra numbers mean? These last 4 digits represent specific delivery routes within delivery areas. This extra detail means an even more precise matching to a more granular level. It could represent a handful of houses on one side of a street, or even a single building that receives a high volume of mail.
