FAQ

PROs are responsible for collecting income on behalf of songwriters and music publishers when a song is publicly broadcast or performed. Public performances can include play on television or radio, in clubs and restaurants, on websites, or on other broadcasting systems.

When you sign up for CD Baby Pro Publishing Administration, we will: Affiliate you as a songwriter with a Performing Rights Organization (P.R.O.) in the US (ASCAP, BMI) and Canada (SOCAN); administer your existing P.R.O. affiliation; or guide you to your country's P.R.O.

CD Baby does not own your masters. You keep 100% ownership of your music and CD Baby never takes any publishing or ownership rights.

When a publisher and a songwriter join a society, each is awarded 50 percent of each of the songs they register. That means that when royalties are collected, the societies pay each of them half, and the societies pay each person/business directly.

CD Baby does not handle copyright registration on behalf of artists for any submission. Copyright registration can only be done directly through the U.S. Copyright Office.

International royalties are distributed quarterly by BMI after the deduction of an administrative fee, which is currently 3.6%, but which is subject to change at any time.

Performance royalties are typically split into two equal halves: a writer share (50%) and a publisher share (50%). Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) and Collective Management Organizations (CMOs) collect and account for each of these revenue sources separately.

How do performance royalties get divided up? For all publishing royalties that are generated from the usage of your music, 50% is paid to the songwriter/s and 50% is paid to the publisher/s. If you've not signed a deal with a publishing company, you are considered both the songwriter AND the publisher.

Generally, like performing rights royalties, mechanical royalties go to the songwriter. However, sometimes a songwriter will choose to share these royalties with the rest of the band. If you have a publishing deal, your publisher will receive a percentage of your mechanical royalties before paying them out to you.

Performance Rights Organizations or PROs (in the US that's BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC) collect songwriting performance royalties from music users, and then pay songwriters and rights holders (publishers).
