2.37 INTERSTATE TRANSMISSION OF EXTORTIONATE COMMUNICATION / 18 U.S.C. Sec. 875(b) is a federal law that makes it a crime to transmit extortionate communication in interstate commerce. This law prohibits any person from using any facility of interstate or foreign commerce to send any communication that contains a threat to cause injury or to cause property damage in order to extort money or anything else of value from another person. This law applies to any communication, including but not limited to, mail, telephone, radio, television, and computer services. Sec. 875(b): (1) the first type of this offense is for the transmission of the threat of physical injury or property damage, and (2) the second type is for the transmission of the threat of economic harm.
