FAQ

Using your LPC license in another state typically requires that you apply for licensure in that state. Each state has its own rules about transferring licenses, which may involve additional examinations or proof of experience. It’s best to check the specific regulations of the state of interest before making plans. For a thorough overview, refer to the Tennessee Disclaimer with regard to Website of Licensed Counselor of Social Work or Similar such Therapist.

Tennessee has a reciprocity agreement with Kentucky allowing Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs) in Kentucky to apply for an LPC/MHSP license in Tennessee and vice versa, though Kentucky does not accept LPC licensure without the MHSP designation as per the reciprocity agreement.

In Tennessee, we have a two-tiered licensing system. The LPC/MHSP means that the practitioner can prevent, diagnose, and treat mental, emotional or behavioral disorders and associated disorders which interfere with mental health. The majority of LPCs in Tennessee hold the MHSP designation.

To become an LPC/MHSP in Tennessee, you must complete a master's degree in a counseling-related field that includes a 500-hour practicum or internship with at least 300 hours in a mental health or community-based setting and nine credits in mental health assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.

LPC/MHSPs may not prescribe medication or use psychological and clinical tests designed to identify and classify abnormal or pathological behavior. LPC/MHSPs may practice as independent practitioners.

Educational Requirements A prospective Tennessee LPC/MHSP must complete a graduate program with a counseling major. The educational institution may be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools or other comparable accreditor; programmatic accreditation by CACREP is also accepted.

For the LPC title you will need 50 hours of direct supervision from a qualified supervisor each year. LPC candidates may be supervised by LPC, LPC/MHSP, Senior psychological examiner, Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker or Marriage and Family therapist.

Similar to the title psychotherapist, the title counsellor is not legally protected. So you should check the professional's credentials to ensure they are qualified to practice.

Additional Information. The Tennessee Board of Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Marital and Family Therapists, and Licensed Pastoral Therapists has an alternative route to licensure for counselors who have already obtained their licenses in other states. This process is called licensure by reciprocity.
