A Tennessee Summons is a legal document issued by the court in the state of Tennessee. It serves as a notification that a lawsuit has been filed against the recipient, and that the recipient must appear in court to answer the complaint. There are two types of Tennessee Summons: a Summons to Appear and a Summons for Service. A Summons to Appear is sent directly to the defendant and informs them of the lawsuit and the time and place of the court hearing. A Summons for Service is sent to a third party, such as a process server, with instructions to serve the defendant with a copy of the Summons to Appear. Both types of Summons must include the name of the court, the case number, the names of the plaintiff and the defendant, and the date and time of the court hearing.
