Tennessee Surrender to Adoptive Parent (also known as "Relinquishment of Parental Rights") is a legal process by which a parent voluntarily terminates their parental rights and surrenders a child to an adoptive parent or family. The process typically begins with a legal document, filed in the county court, which states the parent’s intent to surrender their parental rights and provides identifying information about the child. The court will then review the request and, if approved, will issue an order that terminates the rights of the parent and transfers legal guardianship of the child to the adoptive parents. This process is often used when biological parents are unable or unwilling to care for their child but still wish for the child to have a loving home. There are two types of Tennessee Surrender to Adoptive Parent: Voluntary Surrender and Involuntary Surrender. Voluntary Surrender is when the parent voluntarily terminates their parental rights and relinquishes the child to an adoptive parent or family. Involuntary Surrender is when the court orders, against the parent’s wishes, the termination of the parent’s rights and transfer of the child to an adoptive parent or family.
