The Oklahoma Certified Sign Language Interpreter Application (OCS LI) is an application process developed by the Oklahoma State Department of Education (ODE) for individuals who wish to become certified as a sign language interpreter in the state of Oklahoma. This process involves a combination of educational and professional requirements that must be met before an individual can become certified. The OCS LI is divided into two distinct parts. The first part is the application process, which requires individuals to submit an application form, along with documentation of any educational and/or professional qualifications. This documentation must demonstrate proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) as well as knowledge of the legal and ethical responsibilities of an interpreter. Once the application is approved, the individual must take and pass a written and practical examination to become a certified interpreter. The second part of the OCS LI is the continuing education requirements. Individuals must complete 10 hours of professional development every year to remain certified. This professional development must be related to ASL, interpreting, and legal and ethical responsibilities. There are three distinct types of Oklahoma Certified Sign Language Interpreter Applications: the initial application, the renewal application, and the continuing education renewal application. The initial application is for individuals who have never been certified as an interpreter in Oklahoma before. The renewal application is for individuals who are already certified, and the continuing education renewal application is for individuals who need to renew their certification.
