New York Vehicle Inspection Record — Safety is a document issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that is used to certify that motor vehicles have met the minimum safety standards in order to be legally operated on New York State public roads. This record includes a variety of safety information such as the vehicle's make and model, the vehicle's odometer reading, the vehicle's emissions test results, and any safety defects noted during the inspection. The two types of New York Vehicle Inspection Record — Safety are the Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) and the Vehicle Inspection Summary (IS). The VIR is a written report which includes details about any safety defects found during the inspection, while the IS a form which simply indicates whether the inspected vehicle meets the minimum safety standards or not.
