Illinois Case Management Orders (CMOs) are legal documents issued by the Illinois courts that outline the expectations and responsibilities of the parties involved in a case, as well as the timeline for proceedings. CMOs are used to ensure that litigation is conducted in an efficient, organized and timely manner. They are issued to promote the orderly and timely disposition of cases and to ensure that all parties to the action are kept informed of the progress of the case. There are two types of Illinois Case Management Orders: Pre-Trial Case Management Orders and Post-Trial Case Management Orders. A Pre-Trial CMO is issued at the beginning of a legal case to set out a framework for the proceedings that will take place before the trial. It will typically include deadlines for filing motions, discovery, and other pre-trial activities. On the other hand, a Post-Trial CMO is issued once the trial has concluded to provide instructions and deadlines for post-trial activities such as the filing of appeals, motions for a new trial, or motions for sanctions.
