The California Notice of Mandatory Evaluation Conference (CME) is a legal document required by the California Department of Education. It is used to initiate a special education evaluation process for a student suspected of having a disability. The CME informs the student's parents or guardians of their rights and responsibilities in the evaluation process, including their right to participate in the evaluation and the right to refuse the evaluation. There are two types of California Notice of Mandatory Evaluation Conferences: Initial Evaluations and Reevaluations. An Initial Evaluation is used to determine if a student has a disability that qualifies them for special education services. A Reevaluation is used to determine if a student's needs have changed and to update their individualized educational plan (IEP).
