FAQ

HOW LONG DOES ADOPTION TAKE? Adoption timelines vary depending upon the circumstances surrounding the child and the inquiring family. As a general guideline, adopting through the Heart Gallery can take on average 9-12 months from inquiry to finalization.

Alaska law provides for adoption of adults. Only the consent of the adult to be adopted is necessary, unless the adult is married or incapacitated. Married adults must obtain the consent of their spouse to complete an adult adoption.

(1) A consent by a minor child over the age of 10 to the child's adoption must be signed in writing and must be in the presence of the court unless the court in the best interest of the minor dispenses with the minor's consent or the requirement that the child consent in court.

As is the case in most states, Alaska law allows any person to be adopted (even adults) but those 10 and older must consent to the adoption in most cases. While Alaska requires a home residency process prior to the finalization of the adoption, no exact period of time is indicated in the statute.

When the state removes a child from his or her home, it must petition the state court to approve the removal and to make the child a ward of the state. In Alaska, these child welfare cases are called Child in Need of Aid cases, or CINA (pronounced ?China?) cases.

What should be included? Information as to how they know you, including how long they may have known you. Any information about your character. Describe your strengths. Do they recommend that you adopt. Attributes you may have that would be fitting for adopting/parenting a child. Information about your marriage/relationship.

State contact information. For information on how to become a foster or adoptive parent, contact the Alaska Center for Resource Families by calling 800-478-7307 or 907-479-7307, or by using the AdoptUSKids request to be contacted form.
