Alaska Anchorage CHINA (Child in Need of Aid) Therapeutic Court is an innovative program that works to reduce incarceration and provide wraparound services to children and families involved in a child welfare case. The court focuses on providing treatment and services to help keep families together while ensuring the safety of children. CHINA Therapeutic Court is a collaborative effort between the Anchorage court system, the Department of Health and Social Services, and a variety of community organizations. The court consists of two different types of court proceedings: the CHINA Review Conference and the CHINA Treatment Court. The CHINA Review Conference is a one-time conference where the court hears from all parties involved in the case and makes decisions on how to best serve the child and family. The CHINA Treatment Court is a longer process that is tailored to meet the needs of the child and family, with court appearances occurring at least every six weeks. The court works with a multidisciplinary team to develop an individualized treatment plan for the child, family, and court. The team provides a variety of services, including counseling, substance abuse treatment, parenting classes, and other services.
