The Washington Indian Child Welfare Act Notice (Non-Parent Custody) is a legal document required when a child is placed in the custody of someone other than a parent or guardian, usually a relative, foster parent, or other caregiver. It is a notice to the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, Indian Child Welfare Unit, that a child is in the custody of a non-parent. It must include the names of the child, the custodian, and the tribe of the child. The notice must also state whether the custodian has been approved by the tribe of the child. There are two types of Washington Indian Child Welfare Act Notice (Non-Parent Custody): Initial Notice and Annual Notice. The Initial Notice must be filed within ten days of the child being placed in the custody of the non-parent. The Annual Notice must be filed by the custodian each year thereafter to ensure that the child remains in the care of the custodian and is provided with needed services.
