A new guardianship law became effective in Washington State in January 2022. This new law permits the appointment of a guardian for persons who are unable to meet their basic health, safety, or self-care needs.
When they call your case, go in front of the judge. Tell the judge that you want a GAL appointed. If the other party does not want the judge to appoint a GAL, they will have a chance to tell the judge why. If the judge agrees to appoint a GAL, you give the judge the original of your Order Appointing GAL to sign.
Usually, it takes at least 60 days to finalize a minor guardianship, so if you need an order before that, you will also need to file a Motion for Immediate Minor Guardianship with your Petition.
All persons and representatives of agencies who seek to be certified as professional guardians in Washington State must complete the University of Washington Professional and Continuing Education (UWPCE) Guardianship Certificate Program as the mandatory training.
