The Sheriff has forty-five (45) days from the time all application materials, to include receipt of the mental health records, are received to either issue or deny a permit. N.C. General Statute 14-415-15(a). Anyone interested in applying for a concealed hangun permit must make an appointment online using this system.
The process for obtaining a Concealed Weapon Permit is somewhat lengthy and can take from 45-60 days. The Sheriff's Office must wait for all forms to be returned to us from mental health sources before we can process your application completely.
Concealed handgun permit applications are available online at Permitium, or in person at the Sheriff's Office Records Division. Renewal applications are also available online at Permitium, or in person at the Sheriff's Office Records Division.
Some states allow an applicant to complete an application online, while others require an in-person visit to the office of the respective issuing authority. There are even states that require the applicant provide a list of non-related character references.
Am I allowed to open carry? Open carry is legal in North Carolina without a permit, if you can legally own a firearm. You must be at least 18 years old with no felony convictions. The state places no limits on weapon caliber size or magazine capacity.
An applicant must: Be at least 21 years old; Have completed an approved firearms training class (there are exemptions for law enforcement); Be a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident alien; Be a resident of North Carolina for 30 days preceding the filing of the application;
How long does it usually take for my concealed handgun permit to be issued? Forty-five to 90 days after all of the required paperwork is received by the Sheriff's Office. A representative from the Sheriff's Office will contact you when the concealed handgun permit is ready for pick up.
