This form is a contract by a professional to teach at workshops for a company whose business consists, at least in part, of putting on these workshops. Consultant is an independent contractor and agrees to indemnify the company putting on the workshop for misconduct or any other damage resulting from his/her teaching. Compensation to Consultant is a percentage of the fees paid at each workshop after expenses (such as renting a facility).

You don't necessarily need a law degree to be a solicitor! Most people assume that to be a solicitor, you need complete a law degree after school. But actually, you don't necessarily need to have any degree to start training to be a solicitor! If you do not have a degree, you can sit the preliminary examination.

Seat is essentially just the code word for "department" in the training-contract world. As you embark on your training contract, you'll rotate through a number of different departments within the law firm that's training you. Each department you work in is known as a "seat".

If you intend to practise as a solicitor in Northern Ireland, you must: have been admitted as a solicitor (eg completed your training) have your name on the roll (a list of all solicitors of the Court of Judicature in Northern Ireland) hold a practising certificate.

How to become a solicitor. To become a solicitor, you must complete an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and you must pass exams set by the Law Society at Blackhall Place in Dublin. You can read about how to become a solicitor on the Law Society website.

Solicitor in Northern Ireland Complete a Qualifying Law Degree from Queen's University Belfast. Obtain a Master (a solicitor with whom the applicant proposes to serve their traineeship). Then complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Legal Studies at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies, Belfast (IPLS).

This route includes the completion of a law degree and usually takes around 5 to 6 years. You'll need your employer's support to join it. You'll also need to pass the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE), which has 2 parts, and do 2 years' qualifying work experience. The apprenticeship will prepare you for the SQE exams.

Starting on Monday 8 September 2025, the training contract is a mix of qualifying work experience across four different seats, one of which will be in litigation. Alongside this, you will study for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) parts 1 and 2 through the University of Law.
