FAQ

If the report seems to show that a child is in danger, they investigate to find out if maltreatment happened. They also decide if your family needs services. In some cases, CPS may file a court case and ask a judge for your children to be put in foster care or placed with a relative.

State agencies administer child protective services in most states, but in Minnesota these services are primarily administered by 84 county human services agencies. In fact, Minnesota is one of only 10 states with a county-administered child protection system.

If you know or have reason to believe a child is being or has been neglected or physically or sexually abused within the preceding three years you must immediately (within 24 hours) make a report to an outside agency. If you know or suspect that a child is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.

Hennepin County is committed to the safety, stability, and well-being of children and families in our community. If a child is in immediate danger, call 911. To make a child protection report, call 612-348-3552.
