Public School Choice New York has an inter-district open enrollment policy, which allows some students to attend traditional public schools outside their district. New York also has many magnet schools.
And to be clear, to attend a NYC public school you must live in one of the 5 boroughs of NYC. If you live outside the boroughs you will be in whatever school district of the town you live in. But out of district students can still attend NYC public schools by paying tuition, just like you would for a private school.
Moving to another area You apply through your local council even if you're applying for schools in another council area or you've just moved to England. If you're applying from another country, contact the local council in the area where you're going to live.
Service of Process Change The DOE accepts service of subpoenas for records and certain other legal papers by email at DOESubpoenas@schools.nyc. Service of process may also be executed by mail to the DOE's Office of the General Counsel, 52 Chambers Street, New York, NY 10007, to the attention of the Subpoena Unit.
If you live in a district that doesn't have zoned schools or you want your child to attend a school other than your zoned option, you will need to go to a Family Welcome Center to enroll your child.
