New Jersey teachers had the seventh-highest average salary in the country during the 2022-23 school year, data from the National Education Association shows. The average teacher in the Garden State made $81,102 last year, a 3.5% increase from $78,387 in 2021-22.
The five-year agreement provides 4.5% average annual raises, though each member's raise may be different based on which step of the salary guide they are on. The state's average annual salary increase is 3.5% for teachers union contracts, ing to the Newark union.
For new teachers contracts that begin with the 2024-2025 cycle that had reached a settlement and reported it to the NJSBA, the average increase — inclusive of increment — is 3.67% for 2024-2025.
The Commission has previously determined that initial placement on a negotiated salary guide is mandatorily negotiable and is not statutorily pre-empted by N.J.S.A.
