Feudal Elective is the best because you can pick and choose across more distant branches of your dynasty and jump over your own kids. If you control a fair share of elector titles and give another to your preferred heir, you're near guaranteed a meritocratic succession to your preferred heir.
Once you have the required crown authority, you find succession laws in the same realm panel. Open it, and select the Succession tab. Here you'll find buttons for changing both succession and gender laws, and clicking those will pull up a panel where you can look at the requirements for changing them.
Switch to Primogeniture indirectly: If you have Gavelkind or Elective gavelkind succession laws and wish to escape into Primogeniture, consider changing to Seniority or Elective first, while working up your Crown Authority (or Late Feudal Administration with Conclave).

You can give your titles to your kids freely and that is fine. That is actually recommended, just keep primary title, duchy, and kingdom/empire for yourself.
You can type the command succ Primogeniture to change your succesion law to primogeniture.

Any ducal or kingdom title can be created by a character who controls at least 51% of its De Jure Counties as long as they hold either two titles of lower Rank or one title of equal or higher Rank; empire titles require at least 81% of their De Jure Counties.
