Starting January 8, 2025, U.S. citizens, Canadians, and non-European travelers must get an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter or travel through the United Kingdom.
An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller's passport. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
You cannot use your ESTA to enter Canada. Canada's eTA is a separate authorization and is required to enter Canada by air. Find out if you need an eTA.
Eligible non-Europeans need an ETA to travel to the UK. Eligible Europeans can apply from 5 March 2025 and will need an ETA to travel from 2 April 2025. An ETA is a digital permission to travel – it is not a visa and does not permit entry into the UK – it authorises a person to travel to the UK.
In addition to your passport, you may need a travel authorization such as a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada. Consult Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada's website to learn which authorization you need: Find out if you need a visa to travel to Canada.
Mailed-in applications are processed in Canada. Centralized Network – Certificate of Identity Section – Crémazie 6th Floor (OSC) 365 Laurier Avenue West Ottawa ON K1A 1L1 Do not mail or bring your application form to any other Passport Program service location.
A Travel Authorization (TE) is used to request approval for a business-related trip. In this document, the traveler indicates trip destination(s), purpose, and dates of travel and requests advance checks. In response, the TE records trip information and schedules advance checks.
You will send your passport to the IRCC office in Ottawa so the visa can be inserted. It's not possible to do this in person. Buy two Xpresspost envelopes from Canada Post: one to send the passport to IRCC and another addressed to yourself so they can return it to you. Xpresspost is an expedited courier service.
If you apply online, fill out the application for a permanent resident travel document (IMM 5444) form in the permanent residence portal. You can apply on paper if you can't apply online and require accommodations, including for accessibility reasons.
A travel document will only be issued if you can demonstrate to the immigration officer that you meet or will meet the physical residency requirement to maintain the PR status. Depending of the office, issuance of a travel document can take a few days to a few weeks/months.
