In July 2020, the law established the Virginia Homestead Exemption as $25,000.00, and then in July 2024, the exemption increased to $50,000.00. This exemption will automatically adjust every three years for increases in inflation.
Taxpayers Age 65 & Older If you, or your spouse, were born on or before January 1, 1960, you may qualify to claim an age deduction of up to $12,000 each for 2024. The age deduction you may claim will depend upon your birth date, filing status and income.
Applicant must be at least 65 years of age by December 31 of the previous calendar year. Total combined income from all sources during the previous calendar year of applicant, spouse, and all relatives and non-relatives residing in the home shall not exceed $25,000.
Applicants who turn 65 or become certified as permanently and totally disabled during calendar year 2025, may apply and receive relief on a prorated basis. Eligibility: Tax relief is granted on the home and the land, not exceeding one acre, upon which that home is located.
It requires the householder's name, address, details of dependents, a description and value of the property claimed as exempt, and information about previous homestead deeds. The document must be signed by the householder and notarized.
Senior Adults or Disabled You may be eligible if you meet the following criteria: You are 65 years or older or totally and permanently disabled, as of Dec. 31 preceding the year of your application. You must own your home.

Applications are available at the county real estate assessments office or local office of the commissioner of revenue. Supporting documentation for income, assets, and liabilities may be required. Proof of age including driver's license, visa, or birth certificate is needed.
