$5,000 DISABILITY EXEMPTION: Section 196.202, F.S. Property to the value of $5,000 of every totally and permanently disabled person who is a bona fide resident of this state shall be exempt from taxation.

Eligible resident veterans with a VA certified service-connected disability of 10 percent or greater shall be entitled to a $5,000 property tax exemption. The veteran must establish this exemption with the county tax official in the county in which he or she resides by providing documentation of this disability.

Michigan law provides an exemption from property taxes for real property owned and used as a homestead by a qualifying disabled veteran who served in the United States Armed Forces (including reserve components) and who was discharged or released under honorable conditions.

Who Qualifies? You are considered a "natural person" (owner or claimant), and not a living trust or other legal entity, such as a S corporation or LLC. Your homestead is in Michigan (whether you rent or own). You were a Michigan Resident for at least 6 months of the year you are filing in.
