For persons age 65 or older or disabled, Tax Code Section 11.13(c) requires school districts to provide an additional $10,000 residence homestead exemption. Tax Code Section 11.13(d) allows any taxing unit to adopt a local option residence homestead exemption. This local option exemption cannot be less than $3,000.
The increased Exemption now applies to qualifying homeowners with homes valued up to $286,250. The plan passed by a vote of 5-0. It eliminates county property tax liability for seniors 65 years of age and older, as well as disabled homeowners, and disabled military veterans, with homes valued at $286,250 or less.
Age 65 and Older Exemption from State Ad Valorem Taxes If you qualify for one of the other homestead exemption listed and are age 65 or older as of January 1, you also qualify for an exemption from the State portion of ad valorem taxes in an amount equal to 100% of the value of your home and up to 10 acres of land.
Basic information about HISD taxes: Homestead tax exemption: $100,000 plus 20 percent of appraised value. Additional exemption of $15,000 for homeowners age 65 and older, or disabled.
You, or your spouse, will qualify for the senior exemption and freeze on the date you become age 65. To receive this benefit, you must complete a Homestead Exemption form and return it to the Tarrant Appraisal District (TAD) at the address on the form.

TIP #9 On form 50-114 (application for homestead, over 65, disabled person, 100% disabled veteran exemption and others), we need all owners and their information listed. The one-per-couple limit inheres in the very meaning of a “homestead.” It is part of what a homestead is. A married couple can no more have a second homestead than an only child can have a younger sister.
A 20% optional homestead exemption is given to all homeowners in Harris County. If the value of your home is $100,000, applying the exemption will decrease its taxable value for Harris County taxes from $100,000 to $80,000.
