Persons who cannot dress, clean, or feed themselves because of physical or mental problems are considered not able to care for themselves. Also, persons who must have constant attention to prevent them from injuring themselves or others are considered not able to care for themselves.
This exemption provides a reduction of up to 50% in the assessed value of the residence of the eligible disabled person(s). Those municipalities that opt to offer the exemption also set an income limit. The income limit may be as low as $3,000 and as high as $50,000.
In Texas, veterans with a disability rating of: 100% are exempt from all property taxes. 70 to 100% receive a $12,000 property tax exemption. 50 to 69% receive a $10,000 property tax exemption.
Optional age 65 or older or disabled exemptions: Any taxing unit may offer an additional homestead exemption amount of at least $3,000 for taxpayers age 65 or older or disabled.
