New Jersey Rest Break Laws New Jersey employers are not legally required to offer rest breaks, except to minors. However, many employers do offer rest breaks as a matter of custom or policy.

The mandatory break law only applies to minors under the age of 18. Minors must be given a thirty (30) minute meal period after five (5) consecutive hours of work. Company policy dictates break and lunch periods for anyone over the age of 18.

In New Jersey, neither state nor federal laws impose restrictions on the number of hours an employee can work per day or week.
